Manhattan resident P.J. Gach knows treasure when she sees it. Even when it’s sitting in a bunch of trash dumped on the curb.
Gach recently told Spectrum News NY1 that 95% of the furnishings in her apartment have been recycled from other people’s unwanted stuff. Obviously she has an eye for discarded treasure.
“All my silverware is from the street,” Gach says. “My sterling silver salt and pepper shakers are from the street.
“There are treasures everywhere you go. You have to stop thinking stuff is garbage, because the fact of the matter is, it’s a treasure right by your feet. All you have to do is pick it up and clean it off.”
Gach recently came across a rowing machine that retails for $200. But rather than keep it for herself, she posted it on Nycfreeatthecurb, an Instagram account she shares with a friend, Sonia Izak, for the purpose of informing their followers that trash/treasure is sitting curbside, somewhere in the city, ready for the taking. Sure enough, someone went to the location and grabbed the rower. That kind of thing gives Gach immense satisfaction. Since the account was started last December, there have been 7,000 posts about stuff that’s unwanted but valuable.
Gach and Izak have no intention of making a buck from the service they provide. Instead, their aim is to reduce waste in landfills and help New Yorkers furnish their homes – albeit in an unorthodox way.
“People are just sending us these amazing warm messages, saying you don’t understand how much you’re helping us,” Izak says.
Helping is what Gach and Izak are all about. They practice the Golden Rule of Recycling: It’s better to give it away than have it hauled away.
